There comes a time when you feel the need to monitor your Mac’s battery, and check whether it is performing as expected or is due for a timely replacement. A healthy battery is always crucial to road warriors such as myself. Aids to ensure that my Mac can get me through the day without having to worry about my battery going out on me at the most inopportune of times.

Thankfully, an application known as coconutBattery is available for free downloading. This program, once installed, allows you to save the current maximum capacity of your battery in order for you to observe any changes that may occur in relation to your battery’s health over time. You also have the option to compare your battery capacity with others through its online service. Be it out of curiosity or simply to gauge if your Mac’s battery is working at par with the vast majority of users out there.

Upon launching the application, you will be greeted with a pretty straightforward description of the various details relating to your battery, a few of which are listed below:

Current charge: The current battery charge is shown here in mAh ( milliampere hour ).

Maximum charge: This is the full capacity with which your battery can be charged with, also shown in mAh.

Current capacity: This displays the same information listed on the Maximum charge field.

Design capacity: This tells you the original charge capacity of your battery from when it left the factory, also shown in mAh.

Mac model: Shown here is your Mac’s model identification string.

Age of your Mac: This field calculates the age of your Mac, using the production date encoded in your machine’s serial number.

Battery load-cycles: Displayed here is the total number of times your battery has received a full charge.

Battery power usage: Lastly, this field here shows your Mac’s current power consumption. This application proves it’s usefulness, if say you need concrete evidence showing you that your Mac’s battery is not functioning as you would expect it to. Running this program also helps you determine if your Mac is already in need of a new battery; that is if your Mac is one with a user replaceable option.

Lastly, you can choose to either check for updates manually or automatically by opening coconutBattery’s preferences window to select and save the latter option. CoconutBattery may not be a must-have app for everyone. However, for those occasions where you would like to monitor your battery’s health and usage, this app is worth recommending as it installs instantaneously and provides loads of information.

MacReview Verdict:

CoconutBattery simply does what it has been designed to do; display battery information and a very detailed one at that. For this alone, it earns top marks in my book.
